The Youth Entrepreneurship and Creative Academy, or YEC-Academy, the project designed and implemented by CYFI’s Vocational Training team, concluded with flair on Saturday, with an exhibition featuring displays of hand-crafted wares and testimonials from the program’s participants.

As the culmination of nearly four-month vocational training program, the Creative Youth Exhibition, which was held at the Alliance Francaise in Ibadan, provided a platform for the program’s participants to showcase what they’ve learned. Shoemaking students filled tables with colorful sandals, slippers, dress and casual shoes — including some original, creative designs, made with denim and ankara fabric — while photography students presented photographs they’d taken on both prominent and prosaic sights and themes. A highlight of the exhibition was the presentation of a short film, written, filmed, and produced by the program’s filmmaking trainees. The film, called “Thelma’s Dilemma,” addressed issues relating to sex and unsafe abortions amongst Nigerian university students.

At the conclusion of the event, YEC-Academy’s participants received certificates of completion, and spoke about their experience in the program. Several said that they are in the process of starting their own small business and soliciting customers as a result of the program. Others said that while they’d gone into YEC-Academy with minimal expectations, the skills they learned and the exposure to other motivated peers inspired them to pursue their creative passions.
